Your Puppy Starter Kit
It’s time to prepare for welcoming one of our puppies into your home, we are so excited for you! Here are the practical supplies that will be included in your puppy starter kit, our way of saying thank you and to help your puppy adjust to your new home as quickly as possible!
Vaccinations
A copy of your puppy’s litter health chart will be texted to you so that you can pre-schedule your puppy’s upcoming appointments, according to the dates listed.
Be prepared to encounter push back to our conservatively spaced out vaccine schedule. Most vets routinely give multiple vaccinations on one day and push for Lepto and Corona to be given.
We have found that multiple vaccinations on one day can cause serious health issues resulting in possible lifelong auto immune conditions, neurological problems, seizures, ear infections, coat loss and ongoing skin conditions. Lepto and Corona have proven to cause severe health issues resulting in expensive hospitalization stays and non reversible health conditions. Following the schedule provided will keep your puppy healthy while avoiding unnecessary health risks.
Full protection against Parvo will be achieved one week after your puppy receives their 12 week Parvo vaccine. Until that time, puppy classes can be attended but avoid public areas, dog parks or places where dogs of unknown health have been, for their protection.
Flea/Tick Medication
Chemical Lawn Care
As a reminder, chemical lawn care and oral or topical flea/tick meds, collars and shampoos have shown to cause seizures, neurological damage and skin issues. Use of or exposure to these products will void your puppy’s health warranty. Click the link below to read just one article of many that talk about these possible health dangers.
We personally use all natural Wondercide Yard and pet spray and find it very effective to kill fleas/ticks, their eggs and to repel. Find a link to their website on our supplies dropdown menu.
Heartworm
Puppies and dogs can become infected with heartworm when they are bit by an infected mosquito. It is important to treat them on a monthly basis during the months that aren’t freezing.
Ask your vet for a brand that does not contain flea and tick medication. Be aware that some puppies develop diarrhea and possible stomach/digestive upset after dosing. If this happens, ask for a different brand until one is found that your puppy tolerates.
Puppy’s First Week
Your puppy has been trained using the “umbilical method.” Using the leash to keep him/her by your side will allow you to stop potty accidents and guide your puppy away from what they shouldn’t chew on and to what is allowed. This promotes hands as being a good thing only offering pets and treats and the leash used to guide and correct.
Once your puppy is obeying consistently and using the potty bell to show the need to go out there will be shorter times needed for leashing then eventually none.
Check out the video below to promote a great first week at home!
Feeding
Your puppy is eating Life’s Abundance All Life Stages food. Feeding a lower protein food provides joints and ligaments the nutrition needed without the rapid growth associated with higher protein puppy foods. The lower protein also prevents loose stools which can hinder housebreaking efforts.
Weigh your puppy each week then look on the back of the All Life Stages food for the amount needed for your puppy’s current weight. Divide that amount into three meals. At around 6 -7 months you can move feeding to just morning and evening.
Puppies can be stressed for the first few days and refuse to eat. In this case, buy a food bowl that doesn’t tip and put your puppy in his/her crate with their bowl and leave them to eat. If they won’t eat the dry food, add a small spoon of the canned food that will be provided and add water to soften. That usually does the trick and eventually won’t be needed, once your puppy is adjusted to their new home.
Order Vitamins
Your puppy has been started on NuVet vitamins to promote a healthy immune system and to maintain beautiful skin and coat. We use the powdered form to mix into the food but the older puppies enjoy the tablet form as a treat because they contain liver and taste great!
Use of these vitamins is not required to fulfill your puppy’s health warranty but is recommended.
